Ackeburg Castle

Burgstall Ackeburg

Follow in the footsteps of the Middle Ages

The original arable castle once consisted of a main castle with a diameter of around 30 meters and an 11-meter-wide outer castle above it.

The area is located at an altitude of 334 meters near the “Selkesicht” viewpoint, which is considered one of the most beautiful stamping points for the Harzer Wandernadel hiking badge.
From there, you can enjoy a spectacular view of the lower Selketal and the imposing Falkenstein Castle.

Today, no above-ground structures of the former Ackenburg castle remain. It is assumed that a village belonged to the castle, but there are no traces of this either. Historical records mention a noble family called de Ackenborch in the 13th century, who served as feudal lords to the Counts of Falkenstein. From the 14th century onwards, references to the castle disappear and only the field name Ackeborch remains.

INFORMATION

Start your hike at the forest parking lot above the former lung clinic.

The trail starts on Falkenweg, an asphalt road that runs alongside a residential area and agricultural land. At the fork, continue along the Kohlenschacht-Weg. Now follow the signs to Selkesicht or Ackeburg.

You reach the castle ruins via a beautiful nature trail. After a stop here, you should definitely continue on your way, as the path leads you to the breathtaking Selkesicht viewpoint.

Tip: Stamp hunters should take the route via the Old Coal Shaft on the way back, as stamp 180 of the Harz Hiking Needle awaits you here.
