City Museum Ballenstedt

STADTMUSEUM BALLENSTEDT

Follow in the footsteps of a glorious era

The town museum is located in an 18th century town house that is part of the castle ensemble. It bears the resounding epithet of probably the most important citizen of the 19th century, Wilhelm von Kügelgen.

Von Kügelgen made a name for himself as a court painter and chamberlain to the Dukes of Anhalt-Bernburg and his self-biography “Lebenserinnerungen des Alten Mannes” is still one of the most memorable books in German literature. Two rooms are dedicated to his work and creations.

Other rooms house valuable folklore collections that shed light on the life and work of the population during the Anhaltine rule and deal with the development of mining and metallurgy in the region.
