Falkenstein Castle

Burg FALKENSTEIN

Immerse yourself in the world of the Middle Ages

Please note the visitor information on the temporary closure of the castle on this page. Find out more about the background and special opening times in the article.

Falkenstein Castle is a worthwhile destination for all hikers and nature lovers: high above the Selke, on a mountain spur in the middle of the nature reserve, rises this imposing building from the 12th century. Here you can let your gaze wander over the entire valley – a dream. Today, Falkenstein Castle is the best-preserved medieval castle complex in the Harz – and as such is the stamp point 200 of the Harz hiking pin.

The castle is open to visitors and houses a museum. A circular route leads over several floors through the historic rooms and their original furnishings. Modern presentations shed light on the eventful history of Falkenstein and its inhabitants in various facets. One highlight is the exhibition of the “Sachsenspiegel” from 1235. This work of law, initiated by Count Hoyer II von Falkenstein, is considered a milestone and still influences areas of our jurisdiction today – you will be surprised what these are. Special offers for children make your visit to the castle a great experience for the whole family.

Tip: Discover the different districts of the town of Falkenstein/Harz.

EQUIPMENT

INFORMATION

As the castle is located in a nature reserve, access by car is not possible. The paid parking lot Gartenhaus is 1.9 km away from the castle.

From the Gartenhaus parking lot, a small train and a horse-drawn tram run regularly between the parking lot and the castle. A hiking trail also leads from here to the castle, which forks later.

The narrow-gauge railroad and Kremser use the main path as a road, while the narrower nature trail as part of the Selketal climb leads hikers to the castle. Highly recommended!

At the parking lot:
Restaurant-Café-Pension “Gartenhaus” as well as a kiosk with small dishes (own parking lot in front of the house).

At the castle:
Burggaststätte “Krummes Tor” (closed on Mondays)
