Harzgerode Castle steeped in history | The Selketal

Harzgerode Castle

Schloss Harzgerode

Go on a journey through the history(ies) of the region

Harzgerode Castle was first mentioned in 1384. However, the castle building on display today is a “new building” from the middle of the 16th century. Prince George III of Anhalt initiated the modernization, as the importance of the castle grew with the appointment of Harzgerode as the administrative center of the Anhalt possessions. Harzgerode Castle was subsequently the residence of the Harzgerode line of the princely house.

Today, the castle is used for a variety of purposes. Take a guided tour and learn about the life of the castle’s former inhabitants. The collection in the Heimatstube tells you all about the town’s history, mining and art casting.

The 200-year history of the Harzgerode district of Alexisbad is illustrated by original pieces from the time when the once important spa town was home to many an illustrious society.

In the tower room, 50 art castings delight visitors and testify to the outstanding quality of the former Meyer ironworks. Sculptures and bronze sculptures by Harzgerode-born sculptor Prof. Wilhelm Otto are also on display in the fireplace room.

The HARZKUGELEUM is particularly exciting for families. The name says it all: In the interactive exhibition, you can trigger various interactions with a beech wood ball and learn all about nature, mining and the industrial history of the Selketal in a fun way.

Tip: After your visit to the castle, go on a voyage of discovery through the town of Harzgerode.
